For too long, we have been brainwashed to believe that when it comes to our health, we are victims – victims of our genes, and the fact that ‘we can’t make new brain cells beyond our teens’. Fortunately, both have now been disproved. ‘Epigenetics’ has demonstrated that while we may be genetically predisposed to an illness, whether the genes are expressed, or not, is affected by lifestyle factors, but mostly by ‘how we think’ and ‘how we feel’! Epigenetics has demonstrated that each cell in our body has antennae and are constantly tuning-in to our thoughts and feelings before deciding what action to take. Also, ‘Neuroplasticity’ has proved that we keep making new brain cells until we die. We are not victims. We are powerful beyond belief! We just need to know how to harness that power.

It was during a 3-year course at the Institute for Optimum Nutrition in London, in the late 1980s, that I first learned about our Autonomic Nervous System [ANS] - the two most significant parts being, the ‘Sympathetic Nervous System’ [SNS], and the Parasympathetic Nervous System [PNS]. The main function of our ANS is to keep us alive – to ensure survival of the
species. Historically, ‘Sympathetic’ mode - often called ‘fight or flight’ - was activated any time we had to flee the proverbial sabre tooth tiger or fight marauding tribesmen. Once the danger was over – and we survived - our body would switch back to its default ‘parasympathetic’ mode, aka, ‘rest, digest, repair and reproduce’, and it was thus, for eons.

However, in what seems like an evolutionary ‘blink of an eye’, there has been a seismic shift. For millions, sympathetic, ‘fight or flight’, has become their default autonomic nervous system [ANS] mode. What has caused this shift? Well, the world we live in is unrecognisable from a few decades ago. Until the 1980s, we had three TV channels in the UK. Technology -as we know it- was non-existent, and we were not overwhelmed by choice, as we are today. For teens, the most profound change is social media, and cyber bullying. A few decades ago, it was normal for people to take time to reflect on emotional upsets, with a view to resolving their feelings. Nowadays, instead of reflecting, many seek validation for their feelings on online forums.

How does this impact our physical health? We are either in ‘Sympathetic Mode’ [stressed] or ‘Parasympathetic Mode’ [relaxed]. Our cells eavesdrop on our thoughts and feelings, and they interpret stressed/negative thoughts and feelings as ‘danger’, which activates our sympathetic nervous system. Many people these days are ‘sympathetic dominant’, which means their body will struggle to digest food properly, sleep properly, repair damaged tissue, reproduce... and in recent years, we have been informed that stress causes ‘leaky gut’, and a dominance of ‘bad bacteria’; both of which lead to inflammation - a leading cause of chronic illness. To digest food properly, sleep properly, repair damaged tissue, reproduce, and prevent ‘leaky gut’, we need to be in parasympathtic mode most of the time.
